Bolivia Defers Hearing against Ex President

Sucre, Bolivia, Aug 25 (Prensa Latina) The public hearing against Bolivian ex President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada (2002-2003), due to the massacre on October, 2003, was postponed for September 1, government sources said on Tuesday.

“The trial will resume on Tuesday September 1, with the relevant stage to the statements by the accused,” according to an Attorney General’s Office communique.

The Justice Ministry expressed concern about the decision by the Court of Responsibility Trials of the Supreme Court of Justice, of suspending the hearing by request of one of the accused, a situation that delays the trial eight days.

The Bolivian government has been negotiating Sanchez de Lozada’s extradition for years. He took refuge in the United States, after being accused of the mentioned massacre, which resulted in 68 deaths and more than 400 wounded people.

Rogelio Mayta, lawyer of the massacre victims, said the delay was due to lack of willingness of the justice system in Washington and Bolivia.
