Culprits of Bolivia Massacre to be Tried

La Paz, Oct 2 (Prensa Latina) The Bolivian Chamber of Deputies approved the report of the Special Legislative Commission on the Porvenir massacre, Pando, which demands an ordinary penal process for those involved in those events, including mayor Leopoldo Fernandez.

Cambio daily reported today that for nearly one year, a working group investigated the assassination of at least 13 farmers in that Bolivian region last year, and found significant proofs involving Fernandez and another 77 people in the bloodshed.

The former mayor is currently at the San Pedro jail in La Paz, accused of terrorism, criminal links, and serious injury.

According to the secretary of the parliamentary commission, Deputy Jorge Silva, those responsible also include Ana Melena and other officials from Departmental Road Service, the mayoralty, and the civic committee.

The approved report will be sent to the General Attorney’s Office to bring the process forward and try the culprits, Silva said.

Of those involved, 24 are in the country and the other 54 in Brazil.
