Evo: ALBA to Tackle Key Regional Issues

La Paz, Oct 1 (Prensa Latina) Bolivian President Evo Morales highlighted on Thursday that the 7th Summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) will be an ideal space to deeply analyze crucial regional affairs.

The head of State told Prensa Latina one of the meeting’s main issues will be The Peoples’ Trade Agreement (TCP), complementary policy to competitiveness of Free Trade Agreements.

Regarding that, Morales said that cooperatives and small enterprises are unable to compete with big transnationals, that is why, he stressed, “we will defend fair trade among States.”

The Bolivian president favors the TCP as response to the weakening neoliberal model, the result of deregulation, privatization, and indiscriminate opening to markets encouraged by the US in South America.

Representatives from the nine ALBA member countries will also debate issues linked to social movements, Armed Forces, and political parties in the region, the president stressed.

“Bolivia will suggest the creation of a regional defense school with our own doctrine, for the training of special forces in the area, not anywhere else,” he sustained.

The ALBA Summit, to open on October 16 in the Bolivian department of Cochabamba, will also study the possibility of a common currency.
