La Paz, Dec 19 (Prensa Latina) Main opposition leaders in Bolivia face denunciation of corruption, including embezzlement, in performing their ruties as departmental prefects.

Cambio daily says that the list includes business leaders and politicians from Santa Cruz, allegedly linked to a terrorist group dismantled in April this year.

It cites wealthy Bolivian-Croatian businessman Branco Marinkovic, emong others, who according to a Parliament fact-finding committee funded the armed group aimed at dividing the country.

One of the most significant examples is former Pando Prefect Leopoldo Fernandez, who is already serving preventive prison for the killing of more than 15 farmers in Porvenir city last year.

Fernandez also faces accusations of corruption in performing his duties.

The opponents describe these accusations as a sort of persecution, but Vice President Alvaro Garcia said that with government efforts and the new Constitution, immunity for politicians, legislators and authorities who have committed any misdemeanour is over.

“It is inadmissible to resort to politics to hide their crimes. Any one who has committed a crime must assume responsibility for it as an ordinary citizen,” said Garcia
