Bolivia’s Morales proposes ‘punctuality bonus’

LA PAZ, Bolivia – The Bolivian government is pushing a bill that would encourage its chronically tardy citizens to show up to work on time.

President Evo Morales’ proposal would order public and private employers to pay a “punctuality bonus” to workers who go a whole month without arriving even a minute late.

The reform would also amend the Labor Code to shield new mothers and fathers from being fired or laid off until their children turn 1 year old.

The text of the measure was posted Friday on the Labor Ministry’s Web site.

It will be sent in May to the congress, which is controlled by Morales’ allies.
