Bolivian Police Probes Explosion in Prison

La Paz, Mar 15 (Prensa Latina) The Bolivian police investigates the cause of an explosion yesterday in the high-security prison of San Pedro de Chonchocoro, 30 kilometers from this city, that caused two wounded.

  According to preliminary data, the explosion occurred about 18:30 (local time) and the injured were identified as Juan Villalobos, Jaime Gutierrez, who were taken to “Clinicas” hospital in La Paz, due to the severity of their wounds.

One of the neighbors confirmed to press that at the end of Sunday afternoon she heard a loud explosion, as if it were a grenade, and then police mobilize nervously.

On Monday morning the prison had a strong police guard: a large police contingent heavily armed with riot guns and bulletproof vests guarded the high security prison, which houses 103 inmates.

According to police information, usually 60 security guards watch the prison and after the explosion the security was reinforced with about 20 more.

San Pedro de Chonchocoro is one of the most secure prisons in Bolivia, and among the prisioners is the former dictator Luis García Meza (1980-1981) and his Interior Minister, Luis Arce Gomez.
