Morales Administration Builds 700 Playing Fields in Bolivia

LA PAZ – The administration of President Evo Morales, an avid soccer fan, has constructed some 700 playing fields for different sports in Bolivia since 2006 at a cost of between $80 million and $100 million, Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linera said.

The vice president mentioned the figures in an address at the inauguration of soccer field in the Andean region of Potosi.

Bolivia has never before invested so much money in sports, with the projects undertaken because Morales is convinced that sports are essential “for building a well-rounded person who is responsible, committed and disciplined,” Garcia Linera said.

“Sports are for our government, for our president, a fundamental element for building the new Bolivia that we are building,” the vice president said.

Garcia Linera said both he and Morales wanted to see Bolivia qualify for the World Cup and compete successfully at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

The government plans to continue investing in sports facilities, but it also wants to train young athletes who have the potential to perform well at the Olympic level, the vice president said.
