Cochabamba, Bolivia, Apr 23 (Prensa Latina) World People’s Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth must change the course in the fight for the environment.Bolivian President Evo Morales promised there would be a great demonstration of the peoples of the world in case their demands and proposals to protect Mother Earth are not heard and complied at the United Nations (UN).

More than 35,000 people attended the meeting and 10,000 of them were representing the five continents and more than 140 countries, including important figures and scientists.

Among the main conclusions of the summit stand out the critic to the capitalist production model as predator of the environment, the need to change this model and the preparation of a document where the Rights of Mother Earth are included and also the proposal of holding a world referendum on climate change for April 22, 2011, in which the peoples will be consulted if the war budget must be used to defend the planet, among other issues.

On the other hand, other conclusions were the establishment of an International Environmental Court based in Bolivia and the collection of debts to rich countries for polluting the planet.

These and other proposals were included in the Agreement of the Peoples or the Cochabamba Declaration, a document that summarizes the Summit that will be presented by the end of 2010 at the UN Summit on Climate Change that will take place in Cancun.

The challenge has been launched: Cancun has to be more like Cochabamba than to Copenhagen.
