Bolivia: Disasters Affected 8,000 Families in 2009-10

La Paz, May 7 (Prensa Latina) The Bolivian department of Potosí (south) listed as victims 8,000 families and 12 dead due to consequences of natural events registered during the end of 2009 and 2010.

  The person Responsible for the Unit of Irrigation of the Prefecture, Jhonny Callapino, told the press that the majority of families affected were registered in southeastern Potosi.

There producers of quinua support long periods of drought and sporadic intense hailstorms that damage production of what is called the Golden Bean.

Other regions affected were central and northern Potosi where prolonged and intense rains accompanied the hailstorms and other phenomena have caused the overflowing of some rivers and floods.

All this resulted in loss of cultivable lands and destruction of some defensive that affect entire communities in some cases and in others loss of agricultural production.

Callapino explained that the Potosi prefecture in coordination with Civil Defense managed to assist with food and necessities of more than 70 percent of the victims.

According to the official the declaration of Zone of Emergency in the department to replace and restore some damages and to obtain more economic resources and reach the remainder of those affected.
