Hope Pinned on Cancun, Says Evo Morales

United Nations, May 8 (Prensa Latina) President of Bolivia Evo Morales warned on Friday that if the upcoming summit of Cancun on climate change is similar to that of Copenhagen, the United States will lose its authority before the people around the world.

He said peoples hope is pinned on the meeting to be held in December in Cancun, expected to count on the participation of social movements that will go there to contribute to discussions rather than to fight. Today Morales gave UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon the conclusions of the World Conference of the Peoples on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth held last month in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

In a press conference, accompanied by representatives of several social organizations that played a key role in the Cochabamba meeting, Morales highlighted the importance of agreements reached in the forum by nearly 40,000 delegates from 140 countries.

He described as unprecedented that the UN Chief received members of the social movements, who urged the United Nations to hear and respect the decisions adopted in Cochabamba.

He said that if the Cochabamba conclusions are not heard or respected, “I very much lament it, but the UN will lose its authority.”

Morales added that nowadays, the United Nations and the world movement for the rights of Mother Earth are the two most important instances linked to the climate change issue.
