Bolivian policemen’s bodies handed over

A Bolivian indigenous group, known as the Warrior Clans, has handed over the bodies of four policemen, 12 days after killing them.

The area, in which the law officers had been abducted, is located in the province of Potosi and is a well-known smuggling route for cars from neighboring Chile.

The policemen are believed to have been killed on May 23.

The group had accused the officers, who had belonged to a unit tackling car theft, of extortion.

The group members demanded that they not be charged before handing the bodies over to Bolivian authorities.

Prosecutors say that they will investigate the deaths despite the fact that the Warrior Clans have obtained a written promise that the relatives of the murdered policemen would refrain from pressing the charges.

The Warrior Clans had initially refused to release the bodies of the slain officers on the pretext that the police should investigate the deaths of four members of the clan.
